My dad played a minor extent bemused game with me when I was young. How fast can Allison read this?

I presume from quickly. I think it’s a genetic thing. My father and my son do, too.

The event was simple. Dad would give me a book and then ask later how long it took me to read it. Sounds like a speechless game, but in the fifth grade, I got a lot of mileage out it.

One Saturday afternoon in the cookhouse, after watching me plow through a “Nancy Drew” register in about 35 minutes, my father said that I needed to read happier books. He took me upstairs to his bookshelves, muttering something that sounded like “See if she can present this in an hour” and handed me Mark Twain’s “Puddn’prime minister Wilson.”

This book looked as if it had nothing in it about rescued orphans in pinafores or preteen girls who find out from their birth certificates they are adopted. My favorite subjects at the time.

Dad sinistral me with the book. I flipped through the pages. Not a spunky girl with a winning smile in vision. I slipped the book back into my father’s vaguely alphabetized bookshelves.
