Sam Villela admits (and his fans would most certainly assert) that onstage he's intense and brooding singing behind his bank of vintage keyboards — a battered arsenal that includes a Hammond B3 quarterly and Leslie tone cabinet, electric piano and clavichord.

But that wasn't the Villela on array at a recent Christmas party just south of downtown.

That meagre gathering had the pleasure of watching Villela untethered — smiling, dancing with his girlfriend, Theresa, shimmying and falsetto singing to Marvin Gaye 's “Got to Give It Up.”

Later, in the wee hours he was announcing that he was customary to listen to “Ambrosia all the way home.”

“And I did, too,” said Villela with a chortle.

About that funky '70s dancing: “I've wanted to do a lot more of that kind of subject,” he said. “That's where I'd love to be, soul music. I'd like to let free.”

Villela, who relocated to Seattle in October and is best known as a colleague of Sexto Sol and the Local Chapter, is in town for the holidays and reunites with the Specific Chapter at Saluté tonight.
