And so they fled Uganda and came here, thousands of kilometers east with smidgin more than the clothes on their backs. They came as brothers to live in a scorching refugee tent in northern Kenya. Surrounded by thousands of others who have fled wars and drought in neighboring countries, they came here to bail someone out their own lives.

These two men are not rebel soldiers. They are not fleeing war or drought, and they aren’t at bottom brothers. They are lovers, and they came here to escape what they feared would be certain death after being outed last year in a hinterlands where homosexuality is widely considered a mortal sin, as "unnatural" as it is "un-African."

Alex and his friend Michael — whose real names cannot be used because of a continued presage of violence against them — were the target of a series of violent attacks inspired, they say, by an American evangelical race that began in 2009, and inspired legislation that, if passed, would have made gay acts punishable by the finish penalty.
