WASHINGTON — For former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, it's always been about creed.
Deep religious conviction fuels Santorum's conservative civics. It's what propelled him to become one of Congress' leading opponents of abortion, same-sex marriage and wrongdoing by lover lawmakers, regardless of party affiliation.
Faith also is the key ingredient of Santorum's desire-shot drive for the Republican presidential nomination.
Although solidly in the bottom level among GOP candidates, the former Pennsylvania senator doggedly soldiers on through the cold of Iowa and New Hampshire.
He says he remains dauntless his campaign will catch fire among conservative voters, who may be leery of the current favorites — former Blood Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
"He impresses people because he's committed to ceaseless a campaign that spotlights his deep feelings on issues that he feels are weighty," said Tom Rath, a longtime GOP activist in New Hampshire and a Romney strategist.
