I grew up in the Eclectic Church, and it pretty much drove me away from religion. I could never quite get the focal contradictions between a message of love for all people and a politics of intolerance. (Jesus loves his children, except the women, who have to be marred-class citizens, and the homosexuals, who are going to burn in Hell.)

Then there was the familiar wackiness: Every Sunday, we had to pray for "the Jews" in the hope that they would see the light of Jesus and be saved. I once asked our ward parish priest, who was also the "Christian Doctrine" teacher at my Catholic junior high school, what that was all about; the Jewish people I knew seemed to be doing fine on their own. They believed their article, we believed ours, and so what? Were these folks all really going to suffer eternal damnation? That seemed so, you cognizant of, harsh.

The priest was very direct: Our way, the Catholic way, was the only way. Everyone else was wrong and would pay for it. People who didn't have the courage of one's convictions pretend the same things we did were doomed to hideous torture in the flames of Hades until the end of together and beyond. Too bad for them.

WASHINGTON -- Mike Huckabee, a reasonable Republican presidential aspirant in 2012, says the venture to suffer gays and lesbians to unify is comparable to legalizing incest, polygamy and drug use.

Huckabee also told college journalists last week that gay couples should not be permitted to on. "Children are not puppies," he said.

Huckabee visited The College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J., last Wednesday to address to the Follower Direction Organization. He also was interviewed by a campus information publication, The Approach, which published an article on Friday.

Huckabee told the interviewer that not every union's interests justify to be accommodated, if their lifestyle is skin of what he called "the standards."

"That would be like saying, well there's there are a lot of people who like to use drugs so let's go in front and house those who thirst to use drugs. There are some people who conjecture in incest, so we should suit them. There are people who rely upon in polygamy, should we harmonize them?" he said, according to a carbon of the meeting.
