Charlotte Gainsbourg starred in her first music video-- a polemical duet with her famed father Serge called "Lemon Incest" -- in 1984 at age 12 and released her first album two years later. But it wasn't until 2010 that the acclaimed French chorus-boy and actress gathered up the nerve to sing in front of an audience on her first-ever tour. Though she comes from a kinsfolk of performers (her mother is British singer Jane Birkin ), Charlotte is far from a fundamental onstage; she's nervous, tentative, uncertain. So her recent live album, the accurately-dubbed Stage-manage Whisper , isn't as much an exhibition of supreme stage prowess as a triumph of will.
Elegantly hunched in a position in a corner room at Manhattan's Bowery Hotel, she's nothing but self-parlous. Even with her tour in support of the Beck-produced IRM behind her, she doesn't feel like she's professional anything as a live performer yet.
